Cadbury Marathon moves to Easter in 2021

With the likelihood of Tasmania having restrictions in place for mass participation events
into early next year, the CADBURY Marathon will move from its traditional January date
to Easter Sunday (Sunday 4th April) in 2021.

The Marathon is one of Tasmania’s most popular sporting events, offering a range of
racing distances from 1km, through to the traditional marathon.

With over 2500 people participating in this year’s event, 900 keen athletes travelled
from interstate and around the world earlier this year delivering over $500,000 in
economic benefit to the State.

Acknowledging the controlled easing of restrictions and to ensure the safety of our
people and communities, event owner Athletics Tasmania and Naming Rights Partner
CADBURY, agreed that the best option for the event would be to move it to an alternate
date.

“The CADBURY Marathon is an integral part of the calendar for athletics in Tasmania
which has seen continuous support from Tasmanians and many interstate and
international visitors” said Athletics Tasmania President Damon Thomas
“Moving the date to the 4th April will provide an opportunity for more Tasmanians to
participate and hopefully give greater options for our interstate and international friends
as borders are progressively opened. It means more people can then come and enjoy
an extended stay in Tasmania over Easter and see what our great State has to offer”.

The Marathon rolled into existence back in 1984 and has since become a mainstay on
the Tasmanian sporting calendar. CADBURY’s Claremont Factory Manager Ted Best
was influential in bringing the event to Hobart, after witnessing the success of the
London Marathon in the 1980s.

“CADBURY has been part of the fabric of Tasmania for nearly 100 years, and we love
the opportunity to invite racegoers to the grounds of our factory each year for the event,”
said Paul Chatfield, Marketing Director – Chocolate, Australia & New Zealand. “We’re
continuing to work closely with Athletics Tasmania and state officials to ensure the 38th
edition of the CADBURY Marathon is a huge success and ensures safety for
participants and our Tasmanian community.”

It’s set to be a busy Easter weekend, with the CADBURY Egg Hunt & Family Picnic Day
scheduled for Friday, 2nd April at the Royal Hobart Botanical Gardens, with all proceeds
donated to further medical research in Tasmania

Like with many public events and activities, the 2021 Marathon may be subject to
further restrictions and conditions as we head towards a COVID normal. Athletics
Tasmania will continue to work hard to ensure the 38th running of this event is as
popular and successful as ever.

Entries for the 2021 Marathon will open on 11th January 2021.
