Athletics Tasmania Appoints Blake Steele As Executive Officer

Published Mon 21 Mar 2022

The Board of Athletics Tasmania (AT) is excited to advise that Blake Steele will commence as Executive Officer (EO) in a new full-time position after Easter. (pictured) The Board went to market with the role after Athletics Victoria advised that the services contract would end with the resignation of Glenn Turnor, who has taken up a position with Netball Australia.

“With Glenn moving on, this allowed the Board to review and reshape the EO role and go out to market with that competitive package. AT has performed well with a part-time and voluntary workforce that includes the EO role; however, there are challenges and opportunities within athletics and the general sporting community that requires full-time attention and support,” said AT Chair Damon Thomas.

“The recruitment process attracted a significant level of interest from applicants, which provided the selection panel with a greater choice than anticipated. The panel was unanimous in offering the position to Blake, and the Board is extremely excited to begin working with him,” said Thomas.

Steele, a former Australian representative in walks, comes from an athletics and Surf Living Saving background. Steele departs Athletics South Australia (ASA), where he has been the Development Manager and State Team Manager for the past two years, working across commercial and community grants, governance, member protection, competition and pathways.

“I am grateful to the Board of Athletics Tasmania for this opportunity and cannot wait to get started in Tasmania in the coming weeks. I have had incredible support from Athletics South Australia (ASA) and the community and am excited and humbled to be the next Executive Officer to work alongside the Clubs, Branches, and members in the Tasmanian athletics family’" said Steele.

Steele will round out his ASA commitments at the upcoming Australian Track and Field Championships in Sydney from 26 March – 3 April and will make the move south, ready to commence after the Easter holidays.

The AT Board would like to thank and acknowledge Glenn Turnor's work over the past 18 months. Glenn took on the role of EO AT while also in his position as Athletics Victoria Chief Executive Officer. He has done a tremendous job with AT to support a new board and build positive relationships within the Tasmanian Athletics community. Glenn has delivered above and beyond the Board’s expectations, which has had added challenges due to COVID. We congratulate and wish Glenn the best on his appointment to Netball Australia as EGM Strategic Projects, Government and Community.
