All Schools success breeds new life into Athletics in Tasmania!

The 2023 Tasmanian All Schools State Championships were held this past weekend with record numbers levelling last years strong participation numbers in the premier Athletics event for school sport.

The action packed two-day event held at the Northern Athletics Centre in Launceston, Tasmania brought together talented athletes from across the state and showcased the potential and excellence in track and field in Tasmania currently.

Despite initial concerns of heavy rain, the weather gods smiled upon us, and the rain mostly held off, allowing athletes to perform at their best. This year, the championships witnessed history in the making, with three Tasmanian records being broken, showcasing the incredible talent and dedication of our athletes:

  1. Under 14 Women's Triple Jump: Cammi Thomas of Exeter High/Newstead Athletics leaped to a record-setting distance of 11.38 metres with a wind-legal +1.8 m/s tailwind. This remarkable jump broke her own previous record of 11.24 metres.

  2. Under 16 Women's Hammer Throw: Arielle Cannell from Mt Carmel College/Eastern Suburbs AC achieved an astonishing throw of 62.55 metres, setting a new record in the category. Arielle had previously held the record at 60.95 metres.

  3. Under 18 Men's 2000m Steeplechase: Jacob Gardner, representing Hobart College/University of Tas AC, completed the race in 5 minutes and 51.52 seconds, breaking a record that had stood since November 1986. The previous record of 5 minutes and 54.4 seconds was held by Dean Rose.

The performances of Arielle Cannell and Jacob Gardner were nothing short of outstanding, and they have been rightfully recognized as the "Athletes of the Meet" for their exceptional achievements.

The success of the 2023 All Schools State Championships wouldn't have been possible without the dedication of our athletes, the hard work of their coaches, the diligence and commitment of our beloved officials. Thanks must go to all involved in making this years championships great, and events like these make our athletic community so special.
